Metal packaging giant Eviosys has partnered with food charity FareShare to expand the output of its Food Life Extension (FLEX) project by 23%. This initiative aims to prevent food waste by converting surplus fresh ingredients into long-lasting canned soups, ensuring they reach those in need instead of being discarded.
By the end of 2024, approximately 500,000 cans of soup will be distributed, with the partnership enabling an additional 145,000 cans to be produced, bringing the total to 625,000 cans. This effort equates to saving nearly 29 tonnes of fresh food that would have otherwise gone to waste.
Once canned, the products are delivered through FareShare’s extensive network, reaching 8,500 charities, including school breakfast clubs, lunch programs for the elderly, homeless shelters, and community cafés. This initiative underscores the importance of metal packaging in addressing food security challenges and sustainability goals.
Simon Millard, Director of Food at FareShare, emphasized the significance of such collaborations, stating: 'As FareShare marks its 30th anniversary, we are committed to tackling food waste. Eviosys' support enables us to deliver more food to our network, helping strengthen communities through food security efforts.'
